News from the WSU-Mount Vernon
Northwestern Washington Research & Extension Center
Summer 2007

Hello from WSU-Mount Vernon NWREC, and welcome to the summer edition of our newsletter. It’s hard to believe that 6 months have gone by since the Opening Ceremony for the new Agricultural Research & Technology Building! It’s been wonderful to see the final phase of construction reach completion with the new greenhouses now operational, the landscaping plantings growing, the parking lot paved, and the building commissioned. It also has been exciting to share the new facilities with many workshop attendees, visitors and guests, including Governor Christine Gregoire, Congressman Rick Larson, State Senator Mary Margaret Haugen, and Director of Washington State Department of Agriculture, Valoria Loveland. Watching our expanding scientific operations place the new offices and laboratories into good use by faculty and staff has been especially rewarding. Thank you for your support, and do stop by to visit!

New Faculty and Staff !

Jeanne Burritt will begin employment as WSU-Mount Vernon NWREC’s new Administrative Manager on July 9. We are so very fortunate to have Jeanne join us as she is an experienced and valued WSU employee, most recently serving as manager in the Business and Finance Section for the College of Veterinary Medicine’s Dean’s Office.  Jeanne brings a wealth of knowledge and skills, and will help our Center grow and reach its full potential. Jan Watts, the center’s former fiscal manager, has been assisting in the front office while the position has been vacant.

Deborah Fitzsimons is now working with Ron Dralle in the General Administrative department. She has two children, lives with her mom and loves to garden. Debbie has a CDL and loves to drive equipment, anything BIG.

Dr. Bev Gerdeman , entomologist and postdoctoral research associate, has recently transferred from WSU Vancouver REU. She earned her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in entomology, specializing in acarology, from Ohio State University. Her M.S. degree focused on resistance development in a predatory phytoseiid mite, while her Ph.D. centered on the taxonomy and biology of a rare family of mites, the Heterozerconidae. A Fulbright scholarship to the Philippines in 2000 provided the opportunity to study the biogeography of these rare mites on eleven of the islands and laid the groundwork for her current USAID IPM CRSP funded project.

Since coming to WSU in 2002, she has worked with Dr. Tanigoshi on a variety of small fruit IPM projects with an emphasis on biorationals and biological control. Her work on the invasive cherry bark tortrix included foreign exploration for parasitoids in the Czech Republic with Dr. Petr Stary of the Czech Academy of Sciences, Ceské Budejovice. A current USAID funded Philippine project takes her to a strawberry growing region high in the Cordilleras of central Luzon for three months where she is responsible for developing small-scale farmer production and utilization of native predatory mites for controlling spider mites. She will be working on projects with Dr. Tanigoshi including flea beetle management on specialty potatoes using a range of strategies. She also assists in providing mite identifications for the WSU Puyallup REC.

Dr. Carol Miles is a Vegetable Extension Specialist, newly relocated to WSU Mount Vernon NWREC.  She specializes in vegetable production and has a strong interest in alternative crops, extended season production, and sustainable and organic production systems.  Some of the crops Carol has worked with in the past include edamame, baby corn, wasabi, pea shoots, mini and icebox watermelon, and heirloom dry beans. For an overview of results from Carol's research program, see her website, http://vegetables.wsu.edu. Carol has her B.S. in Bio-Agricultural Science from Colorado State University and her M.S. and Ph.D. in Vegetable Crops from Cornell University. She has been teaching and learning about vegetable production for 25 years.

Bea Schaefer joined the General Administrative staff in late November as Maintenance Custodian under the supervision of Juan Alonso. Bea operates her own business, The Right Touch, a local cleaning service. Bea’s background includes professional cleaning services since 1994. Bea also spent time in the Navy which took her on tours around the world.  She was one of the first women in the Navy to actually serve aboard ship.  During her Navy enlistment Bea worked as a lithographer, Petty Officer Third Class.

Dr. Hollis Spitler joined the new Entomology program as Agricultural Research Technologist in mid-March. Hollis previously worked as a consulting entomologist with Hercules Inc. and NORAM Corp. in Fresno, California. He also held positions as research assistant for Montana State University’s winter wheat breeding program; IPM manager and customer service rep for Skagit Gardens; science instructor at various high schools and junior colleges; and, Agricultural Research Technologist for the Extension Fruit Horticulture program at WSU-NWREC.

Dr. Lynell Tanigoshi , Entomologist and Extension Specialist, was raised on a 10-acre truck farm in Orange County California, and worked as a produce buyer at a major grocery store before entering Long Beach State University. He earned an M.S. degree in biology under Dr. Dick Loomis who mentored his studies on the taxonomy and ecology of chigger mites in southwestern deserts of North America. His Ph.D. degree from the Department of Entomology at the University of California at Riverside, researched the impact of predatory phytoseiid mites in biological control of spider mites of avocado and citrus. He studied under Dr. Stan Hoyt at WSU-Wenatchee TFREC as a postdoctoral research associate where he modeled spider mite population dynamics, economic injury and regulation by native phytoseiid predators.

In 1977 he was hired by USDA/ARS to work on citrus thrips management at the University of California at Riverside. He accepted a teaching, research and extension appointment with WSU’s Department of Entomology in Pullman in 1983. Here, he focused on the biological control of the Russian wheat aphid with exotic parasitoid wasps, and use of selective chemicals such as seed treatments with neonicotinoid chemistries. He also researched insects and mites of alfalfa seed, sweet grain lupin, canola, edamame and azuki bean in dryland agriculture of eastern WA.

Dr. Tanigoshi transferred to WSU Vancouver REU in 1995 where he developed programs for insect and spider mite pest management in small fruits (i.e., blueberry, red raspberry, strawberry, cranberry) and the classical biological control of the exotic cherry bark tortrix on ornamental cherry. His research emphasis at WSU-Mount Vernon NWREC will continue in small fruit IPM, applied biological control technologies to economically control arthropod pests through selective pesticides, biopesticides, augmentative releases of predatory mites and parasitic wasps, and conservation of natural enemies. He also will research multiple control strategies to economically manage flea beetles on specialty grown potatoes in northwestern Washington.

Temporary employees during spring and summer 2007 include Kerri Brooks, Ethan Brown, Sigma Chang, Barbara Holmes, Jennifer Long, Nate Lloyd, Sara Lloyd, Carrie Miller, Ceci Muscolo, and Esther Neilsen.

WSU Mount Vernon NWREC is pleased to introduce a new and updated web site for its Fruit Horticulture program: http://mountvernon.wsu.edu/FruitHorticulture.html. This program created its first Fruit Horticulture web site in 1999, and have since added lists of varieties included in our research trials each year, annual reports, links to our new Extension bulletins, and current pest management information.  The new site is part of our mission to provide new and current information in an improved format that is clear and user friendly.  We encourage you to browse the new Fruit Horticulture web site and to pass this information along to anyone who might be interested. Note the web site address change and change this in your links where needed. We also ask that if you notice any dropped links or other glitches during the transition, please let us know at kingjack@wsu.edu.
